The Rinspeed sQuba Car

scuba-car.jpg

Well I was about to go apeshit on the Rinspeed sQuba car until I read they admitted to it being inspired by James Bond's Lotus in The Spy Who Loved Me. So after I calmed down a bit and drank my weight in cough syrup I passed out in the driveway on the way to the mailbox. When a passing street-sweeper finally woke me I pissed myself and fell back asleep.

Anyways, the sQuba car can drive on land and "at the push of a button will autonomously transform into an amphibious vehicle capable of diving to a depth of about 33 feet." Hell yes, now that is what I'm talking about. Well, that and passing out in the driveway.

An electric motor with powerful torque drives the rear wheels. The propulsion on the water is ensured by two propellers in the stern and two powerful jet drives in the bow propel the vehicle under water while diving. With zero emissions, zero pollution in the seven seas of this world. The light weight body with components made of futuristic Carbon Nano Tubes encloses in a streamlined manner the driver and passenger who are supplied with fresh breathing air by the self-contained on-board system.

While the pictures above are clearly not real, the car does (or will) exist, and is going to be on display at the Geneva Motor Show from March 6th to 16th. So check it out if you get the chance. And by "check it out" I mean "steal it for me". You see, I'm a professional treasure hunter, and this is just the thing I need to cruise the seafloor searching for treasure. It's been far too long since I've spotted any booty. Well, except my roommate's -- he's somewhat of an exhibitionist.

Bluetooth Sunglasses

TriSpecs Bluetooth Sunglasses

CES Unveiled, a media event held Tuesday that showcases winners of the CES Innovations awards, proved that this annual gadgetfest continues to be a launching pad. We saw everything from a Bluetooth headset that looks like a big earring to an Internet tablet that helps hearing-impaired users stay in touch.

The couple above may look like they're in a Ray-Ban ad, but their sunglasses are actually geeky to the max. TriSpecs glasses connect to your phone or other mobile device via Bluetooth, then let you listen to music or talk on the phone via discreet earbuds and mic (can you even see those on the models' glasses?). The people at the TriSpecs booth say their product (which starts at $199 and zooms upward if you want, say, prescription lenses) delivers high-end audio quality while seamlessly transferring you from music to calls on the paired cell phone.

Difficult Watch

Inspired by the neon lights of the flashy Shinjuku district of Tokyo, this new watch out of Japan is sure to draw plenty of attention when you check the time.

kisai_denshoku_watch_3

The Kisai Denshoku watch is crafted from aluminum and stainless steel, and tells time using a unique set of stacked orange LED bars.

kisai_denshoku_watch_2

A press of the rectangular display button starts an animated sequence that shows the time in three steps. First stage shows the hours, then the second displays ten minute intervals, followed by a third pass that displays the single minutes. Confused? Maybe this simple Flash animation will help illustrate how the Denshoku works:

There’s also an animation mode that lets turns on a lighting sequence once every minute for 12 minutes after checking the time. Why? Dunno. But it sure does look purty. You can even adjust the brightness of the LEDs to conserve battery life.

The Denshoku is available in either black or bright silver brushed metal finishes including worldwide shipping

Prime time for pocket camcorders

Not only did major manufacturers such as Sony and Panasonic introduce their first pocketable video rivals to the Flip Mino HD and Flip Mino at CES 2009, but other big-name companies upped the ante with their next-generation pocket camcorders.

For example, RCA announced its latest model - the slender, 720p high-def Small Wonder EZ209HD. But the weather-resistant, 720p high-def-recording Kodak Zx1 (pictured) may be the new mini-camcorder to beat, especially if it lives up to the performance of its Zi6 predecessor.

The Zx1 feels solid in the hand, lets you choose from a range of case colours, comes with two rechargeable AA batteries and an HDMI cable, and stores video footage on a user-supplied SD or SDHC card.

gadgets2

New breed of web-ready video phones

Two impressive touchscreen VoIP video phones that can also browse the web and play back music, photos, and movie files debuted at this year's CES. Undoing the damage of compression

Turning music into MP3 files diminishes its sound quality by flattening out its dynamic range. But the IHome iP1, an iPod dock boombox, seemingly restores your MP3 files to their original glory as it plays them.

3D gaming comin' atcha

The new nVidia GeForce 3D Vision Glasses Kit might succeed where many others have failed in the ongoing effort to bring 3D gaming into the PC mainstream. Though you'll need a fancy new 120-Hz monitor, HDTV, or projector, the goggles already support a large number of games and work with any 8800 GT graphics card or better.

Next consoles

Next consoles for 2010?

Analyst predictions for the eighth-gen

Next consoles for 2010? Image 1

Analyst Evan Wilson at Pacific Crest Securities - a company which specalizes in technology research, among other things - says we'll see the eigth generation of video game consoles come 2010.

This is about right, since the Playstation 2, for example, was released in 2000, and its successor in 2006 (the Xbox was ahead of the game, with a four year gap, Nintendo is at five with its consoles). However, I don't put too much stock in this guy's view, as he did once claim (late last year) a second redesign of the DS was complete, with no comment from Nintendo (and a year later, they've flat-out denied it).

Would you be ready for a new set of consoles in two years? Myself, I'm still playing original Playstation and Sega CD games, and drooling over a few modern titles like BioShock. My list of games to play/buy is far too extensive. Please, game companies, no more!

Coffee Making

Coffee Making at Its Finest with Krups XP7230

by guest writer on Jun 15, 2008

krups coffee maker
Krups has always been known to produce some quality devices fit for your kitchen countertop. Perhaps one of the most popular ones that ever came up in the market is the amazing Krups XP7230.
This smart gadget is more compact in size than the other coffee makers which are available in appliance centers. One can easily store this excellent machine in a cabinet with just a blink of an eye. The machine is equipped with standard, high-quality features which are truly admirable. All of these features are quite useful to the homemaker who wants to produce a good cup of coffee every morning.
Moreover, this innovative kitchen gadget also looks smartly sharp, since its stainless steel look will definitely fit into the over-all look of one’s kitchen countertop. You do not have to be problematic about not having your best cup of coffee every morning, as this machine grinds whole beans and extracts its flavor just to bring it out in your coffee. The grind settings are also adjustable, compared to other espresso machines which do not have these feature. Perhaps the only flaw that can be said about this gadget is that its water tank is quite small. It would not be a good one to start with if ever you want to have bigger servings of coffee every now and then.
If you are a coffee lover seeking to have your own espresso at home, then the Krups XP7230 is a good item to invest your money in.

Replacement for the Power Mac G5?

Mac Pro: the replacement for the Power Mac G5?

Now that Apple has rolled out the MacBook, speculation has turned to the sole remaining PowerPC-based computer in the company's lineup: the Power Mac G5. And, as of today, there seems to be at least one thing that can be confirmed about the new computer: it will be called the Mac Pro. At least that's the assumption that can be made based on a recent Apple trademark filing, in which the company claimed the Mac Pro name for, among other things, "computers, computer hardware, computer software, computer peripherals, notebook computers, laptop computers, tablet computers, computer servers, handheld computers and mobile computers." Which means, of course, that this really doesn't confirm anything, except that Apple likes products with the words "Mac" and "Pro" in them -- which we kind of already knew. And this also raises at least one new question: if the Power Mac becomes the Mac Pro, will the iMac become -- a la MacBook/ MacBook Pro -- just the Mac?

Update: Thanks to Jeff for pointing out that there is still one other PowerPC-based computer in Apple's lineup: the Xserve. We'll have to wait a bit to see whether they decide to rename that one.
